PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a dye for providing an anisotropic dye film having high dichroism and a high molecular orientation degree. SOLUTION: The azo dye for anisotropic dye film is in the form of a free acid represented by formula (1) (A1is an aromatic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic heterocyclic group which may contain a substituent group; n and n' are each 0 or 1 and n+n' is 1 or 2; B1and D1are each a bifunctional aromatic hydrocarbon group or aromatic heterocyclic group which may contain a substituent group with the proviso that at least one of B1and D1is a bifunctional aromatic heterocyclic group which may contain a substituent group; when n+n is 1, B1and D1are each an aromatic heterocyclic group which may contain a substituent group; R1and R2are each an alkyl, a phenyl, an acyl group or a triazinyl which may contain a substituent group; m is 1 or 2; p is 0 or 1).
