Thickening agents (I) based on aqueous preparations of non-ionic, water-dispersible or water-soluble polyurethanes obtained by reacting (a) hydrophilic polyols, (b) monohydric alcohols, (c) polyisocyanates and optionally (d) polyhydric alcohols with no functional groups other than hydroxyl, in which component (b) is a multi-branched monohydric alcohol. An independent claim is included for thickener concentrates containing water, thickener (I) as above and optionally organic solvents and/or non-ionic surfactants of the ethoxylated and/or propoxylated 8-18C alcohol type.
