In a milking apparatus a collecting vessel 4 when in communication with a vacuum line via tubes 7, 8 and flexible tubes 9, 11, is supplied with milk from the teat cups via pipe 6, and, when in communication with the atmosphere, supplies milk to the delivery line through a flexible tube 17. The tubes 11, 17 pass through a framework 20 and an arm 24 pivoted at its rear end to the framework, extends between the two tubes so that by moving the arm towards either side of the framework the corresponding tube 11 or 17 is flattened. During milking, tube 17 is flattened against the side of the framework, the tube 11 then applying vacuum to the container to draw milk into the container, and for emptying the container, the teat cups are removed from the cow, the tube 11 is flattened leaving the tube 17 open to convey milk to the milk delivery pipe, air entering the container through the teat cups. The framework comprises a plate 26 having convergent side edges whereby arm 24 is retained in either of its tube-closing positions, the plate being vertically adjustable so that flexible tubes of varying diameter may be used. The tube 11 may also be closed by bending the tube 9 on itself and inserting the bent portion between projections 28. A further tube 14 connected to cups 15 for use when washing the equipment is provided and during the milking operation this tube is bent upon itself and inserted in a loop 16 to hold it closed.
