<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium stacking device capable of stably stacking media even if they are broken or curled. <P>SOLUTION: The number of sheets of note is counted by a classification part for classifying thrown note. The translucency, reflected amount of light, and thickness of notes as the state characteristics of the notes are detected. A space for stacking of a temporary stacking part where the notes are stacked is controlled according to the state characteristics of these counted values.
