PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a drying system, always favorably keeping the heat balance of a heat pump to control the temperature of drying air with good accuracy in applying the heat pump device taking CO<SB>2</SB>as a refrigerant enabling high-temperature radiation as a hot air generator of a drier. SOLUTION: In this drying method, CO<SB>2</SB>refrigerant is operated in a supercritical state by a heater (a gas cooler) 23 constituting the heat pump device taking CO<SB>2</SB>as a refrigerant to introduce heated drying air into a driving chamber for driving a material (c) to be dried. Some of the CO<SB>2</SB>refrigerant flowing into the heater 23 is caused to branch in a flow corresponding to the required heat radiation amount to a branch passage 31 on the upstream side of the heater, and the branched CO<SB>2</SB>refrigerant is heat-exchanged with the outside air (o) by a heat exchanger 39 to radiate heat to the outside, whereby the drying air supplied to the drying chamber 1 is kept at a preset temperature with good accuracy.
