The copier has a plate on which the object is placed or with which it is covered. The document is exposed to microwaves. Reflected microwaves are detected to enable determination of whether or not the document contains a metal strip, a metal fibre or similar, using a first detection unit. The device identifies the type of document, e.g. a banknote or travel ticket, when a metal fibre or strip is present, using a further scan with a second detection unit.
