A semiconductor memory and a method for operating the same are provided to increase operation efficiency of the semiconductor memory without increasing the cost of a system where the semiconductor memory is mounted, by performing a first and a second access operation separately. A memory core has a memory cell, a word line and a bit line connected to the memory cell. An enable port receives an enable signal allowing access to the memory core. A command port receives an access command to perform an access to the memory core. An address port receives an address indicating an accessed memory cell in correspondence to the access command. An operation control circuit(14) performs a first access operation when an initial access command is received, and performs a second access operation accessing to the memory core within a shorter time than the first access operation when a next access command is received.
