Method and device for operating a combustion engine

The method involves determining a combustion characteristic value, which is a characteristic for a sequence of combustion of an air/fuel mixture in a reference cylinder depending on a measuring signal of a cylinder pressure sensor. A control variable for a controlling unit is adapted to a given sequence of combustion with respect to a set of cylinders depending on the combustion characteristic value for the purpose of adjusting the sequence of combustion in the reference cylinder. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating an internal combustion engine with a set of cylinders.
