<p>An arrangement is provided for sealing a catalyst substrate (50) in a catalytic converter housing (22) wherein the housing has sidewalls defining a catalyst chamber (30), an inlet opening (26) upstream of the catalyst chamber (30) and an outlet opening (28) downstream of the catalyst chamber (30). The inlet and outlet openings (26,28) provide a fluid flow path through the housing (22) which further has a lateral access port (40) for installation and removal of a catalyst substrate (50) in the catalyst chamber (30) without axial separation of the catalyst chamber (30). A peripheral mantle (54) is provided about the substrate (50). The peripheral mantle (54) has first and second spaced-apart inwardly extending walls to either side of the substrate (50). The housing (22) has an inwardly facing sealing surface facing one of the inwardly extending walls. Locating means are provided which are securable to the housing (22) and which have positioning means extending therefrom which engage the peripheral mantle (54) to hold the peripheral mantle (54) and in turn the first wall enclosed juxtaposition with the outwardly facing sealing surface thereby defining a labyrinth seal (80) therebetween. The labyrinth seal (80) extends in a direction transverse to the fluid flow path and restricts fluid leakage between the catalyst and the housing (22). The locating means are provided with deflecting means for avoiding unwanted force input by the locating means to either the peripheral mantle (54) or the housing (22).
