[Also in Group XXXV] An apparatus for maintaining the temperature of a body 15, Fig. 1 (not shown), particularly a human body, within a predetermined range of temperature comprises a pad 10 having a means through which a heat-exchange fluid circulates, a heater 18, a cooler comprising a compressor 17 and a heat-exchanger 25, and a by-pass valve 19. The patient's temperature is sensed by a thermistor T1 forming one arm of a D.C. bridge 20 having zero output at, say, 37‹ C., the bridge feeding a pair of transistors V1, V2 in a balanced amplifier circuit which controls a pair of bi-stable transistors V3, V4 feeding through an amplifier V5, V9, a relay R1 controlling through contacts 21, 22 alternatively the heater 18 or compressor 17. The output of V1, V2, as modified by another thermistor T2 responsive to fluid temperature is applied to another pair of bi-stably arranged transistors V6, V7, controlling through another transistor V10 a relay R2 having contacts 23, 24 energizing the heater 18 and closing the bypass valve 19.</p> |
