An apparatus and a method for driving a plasma display device are provided to reduce a manufacturing cost by implementing transistors having a low breakdown voltage in a sustain discharge circuit. An apparatus for driving a plasma display device includes an inductor(L), a capacitor, first and second transistors(S1,S2), a rising path, a falling path, and a switching unit. The inductor connects a first end thereof to a first electrode. The capacitor stores a first voltage. The first and second transistors are connected between a first end of the capacitor and the first electrode, and a second end of the capacitor and the first electrode, respectively. The rising path, which is connected between a second end of the capacitor and a second end of the inductor, includes a third transistor and increases the voltage of the first electrode. The falling path, which is connected between the second end of the capacitor and the second end of the inductor, includes the third transistor and decreases the voltage of the first electrode. The switching unit supplies a second voltage higher than the first voltage and a third voltage lower than the first voltage to the second end of the capacitor.
