A process for producing a forming metal mold in which the occurrence of failure, such as collapse of sand mold at the time of prototype pickup, can be avoided; and a forming metal mold capable of clear transfer of pattern to molded items. A reticular member is fixed to the entirety or a part of the molding surface of a prototype, and with the use of the prototype, there is produced a sand mold having an uneven pattern on its molding surface. With the use of this sand mold, there is cast a forming metal mold having the uneven pattern on its molding surface. The reticular member consists of a meshed flexible synthetic resin sheet provided with a multiplicity of mesh openings.
