An antenna comprises a plate conductor 1 with a slit 2. The said plate conductor 1 is electrically connected to a spaced and parallel back plate conductor 4. A conductor line 6 is arranged to span the slit 2 and is connected to the plate conductor 1 on a conductive route from the slit 2 towards the electrical connection 3 extending between the plate conductor 1 and the back conductor 4. The plate conductor 1 may be rectangular with the slit 2 formed in an orthogonal manner to the long edge of the plate. The conductor line 6 may be a conductive member of a coaxial feed 5, a microstrip transmission line or a twisted pair. The other conductive feed-line member 7 may be connected to the plate conductor 1 on the side of the slit 2 which is opposite to that of the first mentioned conductor line 6 by a line or spot electrical connection. A microstrip transmission feed-line may be used which includes a microstrip line with an enlarged end, of various shapes. The U-shaped conductive member of the antenna may be formed by folding a metal plate or an integrated assembly of conductive plates and vias. The antenna may include insulating material such a circuit board. The insulating material may be a foldable cloth, sponge, film or flexible printed circuit board. The simple antenna construction may provide a small, thin and cheap foldable broadband antenna which may be fastened to clothing using a releasable fastening. |
