A liquid bleaching composition suitable for bleaching cotton and linen comprises a perbenzoic acid which is substituted in the benzene nucleus by one or more nitro, chloro, cyano, C1 to C4 alkyl or C1 to C4 alkoxy groups and has a melting point above 50 DEG C., dissolved in a water soluble solvent having a boiling point of at least 120 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure and which is inert to the substituted perbenzoic acid, the solvent being so selected that the solubility of the substituted perbenzoic acid in the solvent and the solubility of the solvent in water are such that an available oxygen concentration of at least 20 p.p.m. by weight of water can be attained under conditions such that none of the solvent remains undissolved in the water. Suitable solvents are the esters obtained by the complete esterification of polyhydric alcohols with fatty acids containing 1-3 carbon atoms, e.g. ethylene glycol diacetate and glycerol triacetate and mixtures thereof.
