A transmitting/receiving system and a data processing method are provided to improve reception performance remarkably with respect to a ghost signal and a noise signal of a channel compared with a conventional ATSC 8T-VSB receiver. A sequence generating unit(46) indicates a supplementary data symbol and generates a previously defined sequence included in supplementary data. An MPEG data processing unit(100) processes data received from a transmission system in the order reverse to that of the transmission system by using the generated sequence. A demultiplexer(56) demultiplexes output data of the MPEG data processing unit(100) into MPEG data and supplementary data. A supplementary data processing unit(200) processes the supplementary data outputted from the demultiplexer(56) in the order reverse to that of the transmission system to obtain original supplementary data.
