In a tire re-tread process for earth moving machinery tires with a load-bearing sidewall (2), the remainder of the old tread is removed and the tire-to-soil interface is prepared for application of a thin rubber bonding layer that extends to the tire external contact edges. The replacement tread torus is open at one point only and has contoured inner and outer faces. The tread is applied by vulcanization.
