A lens assembly of a near field optical recording/reproducing device, a lens protecting device, and a method thereof are provided to protect a near field lens facing a recording medium upon a collision between the recording medium and an actuator and to guarantee a margin of angle deviation for the near field lens. A lens assembly of a near field optical recording/reproducing device comprises a housing(10), a near field lens(16), and a variable protecting unit(20). The near field lens is installed at one side of the housing, facing a recording medium, to irradiate a beam to the recording medium or to receive the beam reflected from the recording medium. The variable protecting unit is positioned on a part of the housing around the near field lens. A projection degree of the variable protecting unit for the near field lens is changed. A lens protecting device operates the variable protecting unit according to a gap between the near field lens and the recording medium.
