The method involves determining main directions of contour lines of an image by selecting accumulation points from a Hough transformation of the lines. The lines at straight segments are approximated along the directions. A segment measuring file counting the segments marked by relative and individual attributes e.g. orientation and position of the lines, having same nature as that of a segment data file, is created. Elements of the data file and the measuring file are compared until finding a concordance permitting to identify the segments corresponding to edges of a track in the image. An independent claim is also included for a device for recognizing a track in an image.
