An apparatus and a method for driving a plasma display panel are provided to reduce power consumption by adjusting an operation of a cooling fan based on advertisement intervals. An apparatus for driving a plasma display panel includes an image processing unit(20), an advertisement broadcast section extracting unit(10), a memory(40), a controller(30), a PDP(Plasma Display Panel) driver(70), and a cooling fan driver(50). The image processing unit receives digital image data and executes decoding and coloring. The advertisement broadcast section extracting unit receives EPG(Electronic Program Guide) information and extracts an advertisement broadcast section. The memory stores a mapping table having the number of sustain discharges for driving a PDP. The controller controls the PDP using a read out mapping table in the advertisement broadcast section. The PDP driver displays images, which are processed in the image processing unit. The cooling fan driver limits operation of a cooling fan in the advertisement broadcast section under control of the controller.
