A pharmaceutical composition comprising gomisin-A is provided to prevent damage of neuronal cells caused by brain ischemia without side effects or toxicity, thereby preventing and treating degenerative brain diseases caused by the death of neuronal cells. A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating degenerative brain diseases comprises 0.01-99 wt.%, preferably 0.1-90 wt.% of gomisin-A isolated from Schisandra chinensis Baillon, wherein the degenerative brain disease is cerebral apoplexy, palsy, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Pick's disease or Creutzfeld-Jakob disease. The composition is formulated as tablet, capsule, pill or solution.
