Method for operating a combustion engine comprises measuring an operating parameter of the engine depending on a first measuring parameter of the engine and testing whether the operating parameter value is plausible depending on a second measuring parameter of the engine and if the operating parameter value is not plausible testing whether the engine is actually operating in the lean phase. The engine is switched into a quasi-stoichiometric phase when the engine is operated in the lean phase. After switching into the quasi-stoichiometric phase the operating parameter value is determined and re-tested and the engine is switched to the lean phase if the operating parameter value is plausible. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a combustion engine. Preferred Features: After switching into the quasi-stoichiometric phase the operating parameter value is re-determined and tested only after a prescribed period of time and/or is switched to the lean phase.
