The method involves providing a collection of three dimensional (3D)-sampling data, which represent the form of a three-dimensional object. The 3D-sampling data is combined in a set of lattices, which is combined in a lattice model. The lattice model is segmented with a segmenting device in the lattice area. The lattice area and a type of the design unit selected. An approximate value is calculated for the selected type of the design unit for the selected lattice area. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a system for approximating an original design units using three dimensional-sampling data (2) a physical medium is provided with computer-executable instructions for use with a computing device to approximate the original design units.
