The machine has a side gusseted sack (1) provided with corner welding seams (2, 3) in corner areas and with a filling tube, and a welding machine is provided for attaching the welding seams downstream to the filling tube. Spreading and aligning flanges are arranged in pairs and determine the side gusseted sack in side gusseted areas. The flanges are arranged at guide bars such that the flanges are movable along arc-shaped paths, so that areas of the flanges are turned upwards and outwards in the arc-shaped paths. An independent claim is also included for a method for spreading a sack with a filling machine.
