A display device of a mobile terminal and an illumination method using the display device are provided to drive the display device mounted on the terminal as an illumination device according to a lot of illumination pattern information, thus there is no need to equip a separate illumination device. A display panel(110) consists of plural pixels. A backlight(161) applies light to each pixel. A backlight driver(160) controls output illumination of the backlight(161). An illumination pattern storage(190) stores a lot of illumination pattern information having each of image information and illumination information corresponding to the image information. An illumination mode controller(170) decides whether a display device of a mobile terminal operates in illumination mode or general display mode. If the display device operates in the illumination mode, the controller(170) drives the display panel(110) with image information included in illumination pattern information selected from the storage(190), and provides illumination information included in the selected illumination pattern information to the backlight driver(160).
