[Also in Group XXIV] In screw-operated rack and pinion gearing for effecting angular adjustment and clamping of a member 11 relatively to a member 10, e.g. in a cutter-sharpening machine, a segmental pinion 13 on the member 11 is engaged by the two sets of teeth on tubular telescopic racks 14, 15, Fig. 2, which are initially moved in unison to effect the adjustment and subsequently moved relatively to each other to take up backlash. The rack 15 has a threaded bore engaged by an adjusting screw 21 slidably keyed to an operating dial 23. The rack 14 is secured to a nut 16 engaged by a tubular adjusting screw 17 coupled by a pin and slot 22 to the screw 21, the rotatable screw 17 being axially located relatively to the member 10 by a flange 18. The screws 17, 21 have the same lead so that manual rotation of screw 21 (e.g. by dial 23 or by a wrench) causes simultaneous adjustment of the two racks and hence of the member 11. Rotation of the racks 14, 15 is prevented by the pinion 13. After adjustment a nut 25 on the end of screw 21 is tightened to cause relative axial movement between the two screws 17, 21 and thus between their associated racks to take up any backlash and to clamp the member 11 in its adjusted position. Preferably a spring (not shown) between the two racks acts to take up backlash during adjustment. Before clamping by the nut 25, the member 11 may be adjusted axially relatively to the member 10 by rotation of a shaft 26 eccentrically carrying a roller 27 engaging a transverse slot in the member 11. In a modification allowing a pinion 33, Fig. 3, to be moved hydraulically relatively to a support 30 between two positions predetermined by adjusting screws, and to be hydraulically clamped, the pinion 33 is simultaneously engaged by telescopic tubular racks 34, 35 secured to respective nuts 37, 38 on telescopic screws 39, 41 coupled by a pin and slot 43. One end of screw 39 is splined to a shaft 44 which can be rotated to adjust the racks by a dial 45 and can be clamped by a nut 46. Rotation of a second dial 51 turns a screw 49 to adjust the axial position of a stop nut 48 slidably keyed in the support 30, a clamp nut 52 being provided. The ends of the screws 41, 39 are formed as telescopic pistons 42, 47 so that application of hydraulic pressure to chamber 54 firstly moves the two pistons and racks to the left until piston 42 abuts shoulder 55 and secondly moves piston 47 further to take up backlash and clamp the assembly in the adjusted position determined by dial 45. Application of hydraulic pressure to chamber 57 firstly moves the two pistons and racks to the right until piston 47 abuts stop nut 48 and secondly moves piston 42 further to take up backlash and clamp the assembly in the adjusted position determined by dial 51.
