<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable to perform sufficient catalyst reaction in a fuel electrode and increase output. <P>SOLUTION: The fuel cell system comprises a fuel cell which generates power by being supplied with a fuel gas and air, an air supply system to supply the air to the fuel cell, a fuel supply system to supply the fuel gas to the fuel cell, a load judgement processing means to judge whether or not the fuel cell is supplying power to an external load device, and an air volume setting processing means to increase the volume of air to be supplied to the fuel cell when the fuel cell is not supplying power to the load device. Since the volume of the air supplied to the fuel cell is increased, waterdrop on the fuel electrode side can be eliminated. Also since the fuel becomes to flow smoothly on the fuel electrode side, reaction of the fuel and the air is carried out sufficiently.
