A field variator (18) matches the lines of force of an alternating magnetic field, with the complex contour of the metallic component. The magnetic field generator (10) is an almost completely-closed, annular induction loop (12). The field variator comprises metallic deflectors. These form angled- or helical internal teeth, on the inner circumference of the magnetic field generator. The deflectors are made of copper or a copper alloy. The alternating voltage source is designed to generate first and second alternating voltage pulses of different frequency, current and/or duration. Inductive hardening of helically-toothed gear wheels is carried out, a coolant supply and/or tank being provided for the purpose.
