This invention provides a vertical magnetic recoding medium, which can realize recording and reproduction of high-density information by realizing both refinement of the particle diameter and vertical orientation of a vertical magnetic recording layer, and a method for manufacturing the magnetic recording medium, and a magnetic recording and reproducing device. The magnetic recording medium comprises a nonmagnetic substrate. At least a backing layer, a substrate film, an intermediate layer, and a vertical magnetic recording film are provided on the nonmagnetic substrate. At least one layer of the intermediate layer comprises an element having an fcc structure and an alloying material of an element having a bcc structure or an hcp structure and simultaneously has a crystal structure of (111) orientation, and a layered irregular lattice (a stacking fault) formed by mixing of an fcc structure with a bcc structure or an hcp structure. At least one layer constituting the intermediate layer comprises an alloy having an fcc structure composed mainly of at least one element selected from the group consisting of Pt, Ir, Pd, Au, Ni and Co, and an alloying material of an element having a bcc structure or an hcp structure.
