PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting a change in optical properties of a tissue by a change of a physiological phenomenon of a subject, actually, a change related to the water movement among tissue compartments. SOLUTION: Methods and apparatus for noninvasive determination of blood analytes such as glucose by NRI spectroscopy, utilize the optical properties of the tissue as reflected in key spectroscopic features to improve measurement accuracy and precision. Physiological condition such as a change in water distribution among the tissue compartments leads to complex alterations in the measured absorbance spectrum of skin, and reflects modification in the effective path length of light, leading to biased noninvasive glucose measurement. Changes in the optical properties of the tissue are detected by identifying key features responsive to physiological variations. Conditions not conductive to noninvasive measurement of glucose are detected. Noninvasive glucose measurements that are biased by physiological changes in the tissues are compensated.
