PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for forming excellent images without generating image defect caused by adhesion of discharge products by removing the discharge products adhered to an image carrier, while reducing the image carrier even when a lubricant is interrupted from being applied on the image carrier. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprises: a lubricant application means (3) for applying the lubricant on the image carrier face of the image carrier (21); a toner holding sliding means (4) for sliding the image carrier face of the image carrier in a state holding toner; and a switching means (5) for operating to switch the toner holding sliding means and the lubricant application means.
