An encoding method is provided to improve the encoding rate by estimating a DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform) coefficient in advance before DCT operation during encoding of a moving picture so as to skip a process of computing the DCT coefficient. An SAD(Sum of Absolute Difference) value of a macro block is computed. If the SAD value is smaller than the first threshold value, a DCT coefficient of the macro block is estimated to a value of zero. If the SAD value is not smaller than the first threshold value, a motion vector value of the macro block is checked. If the SAD value is between the first threshold value and the second threshold value, the DCT coefficient of the macro block is estimated to a value of zero according to the motion vector value.
