PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of modifying a microstructure of a titanium alloy for use in manufacturing an orthopedic prosthesis.
SOLUTION: In thermal treatment of the titanium alloy subjected to quenching following thermal treatment, the temperature of the alloy is raised to a temperature higher than the recrystalization temperature of the alloy and lower than the beta-transus temperature of the alloy to cause a phase shift within the alloy. After carrying out the thermal treatment for a predetermined time, the alloy is rapidly quenched to preserve the phase shift induced by the thermal treatment. The microstructure of the titanium alloy is changed from a fine grained alpha-beta phase to a microstructure substantially comprising an equiaxed alpha phase and an acicular or plate-like alpha phase. The formed prosthesis may have a microstructure including between 25% and 75% acicular alpha phase, for example.
COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
