PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sludge discharge apparatus and an operation method thereof reducing load of sludge dewatering in a rear stage, by sufficiently thickening and settling sludge in a treatment tank like a settling tank, and efficiently discharging the thickened sludge. SOLUTION: This sludge discharge apparatus 12 discharges sludge settled in a sludge collection pit 25 of the treatment tank 24, and is provided with a thickening promoting pipe 29 having an opening 28 for receiving sludge flowing from the sludge collection pit 25 and erected in the sludge collection pit 25, a pressure adjusting mechanism adjusting the pressure in the pipe to promote thickening of sludge by raising the water level of the thickening promoting pipe 29 higher than the water level of the treatment tank 24, and a sludge discharge pipe 30 discharging sludge thickened in the thickening promoting pipe 29.
