A method of treating a porous structure, especially a concrete structure, against explosive spalling. The method involves forming an array of channels in said structure, the channels having an opening which opens onto a surface of the structure. The channels are plugged with a fusible material such as paraffin. In the event of a fire, the relatively high temperature around the porous structure causes a partial vacuum to be created inside the channels. The vacuum causes moisture to be drawn from the surrounding area of the porous structure into the channel. This prevents the moisture from changing into pressurised vapour and so reduces the risk of explosions.
|
