A method for initiating mobile terminals to enter an idle mode by network side in a wireless metropolitan area network comprises that: the paging agent PA/base station BS initiates the de-registration command message to the communication terminals; the said terminals send de-registration request message to the said PA/BS according to the said de-registration command message so as to request to enter the idle mode; after receiving the said de-registration request message, the PA/BS releases the links of the terminals and completes the data update of the anchor paging controller PC/location register LR.
