PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a decoloration method for glycolic acid aqueous solution or ammonium glycolate aqueous solution that can attain simple and sufficient decoloration and can obtain glycolic acid aqueous solution or ammonium glycolate aqueous solution having sufficiently high purity in product quality. SOLUTION: Glycolic acid aqueous solution or ammonium glycolate aqueous solution including slightly discolored impurity produced from glyconitrile as a raw material, using a biocatalyst having nitrile-hydrolytic power are allowed to contact with a cationic ion exchange resin, preferably with a strong acidic cationic ion exchanging resin to remove the slightly discolored impurity by ion exchanging and adsorbing to decolor the glycolic acid aqueous solution or the ammonium glycolate aqueous solution.
