PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for processing a medical image which extracts a still image from video data outputted from a medical image generator and transmits the still image to an external instrument without a user's operation. SOLUTION: A control section selects still image data P12 from video data P10, performs character recognition processing on the still image data, and acquires date-and-time information "12:00:00" as a result of the character recognition processing. When still image data P11 containing the same date-and-time information is already stored as transmission data, the control section discards the still image data P12. The control section then extracts still image data P21 from video data P20, performs character recognition processing on the still image data, and acquires date-and-time information "12:10:00" as a result of the character recognition processing. When still image data containing the same date-and-time information is not included in the transmission data, the still image data P21 is extracted from the video data P20 and is stored as transmission data.
