When print substrates of a different sort are fed into the printing machine (1) to correct the register setting, the creation and combination of the sub-color images (3,3') is controlled. If there is a change in the print substrate thickness due to a change of print substrate, the influence of the substrate thickness on the register is taken into account immediately. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for performing the method.
