PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and efficient method for separating a zirconium compound and a hafnium compound, which method is particularly useful for preparing a hafnium compound of a low zirconium content and is free from a defect associated with a prior art method. SOLUTION: The method for separating a specific organic zirconium compound and a specific organic hafnium compound (hereinafter simply referred to as a zirconium compound and a hafnium compound respectively) from each other each having very similar characteristics other than the crystallization characteristics thereof comprises a simple crystallization fractionation step.
