An apparatus for impact dispersal of a force applied to a vehicle, which is a motor vehicle or other carrier. In various embodiments, the apparatus includes at least one hydraulic cylinder (112) in fluid communication with a relief valve (302) and a flow restrictor (116) connected in series. The piston rod (106) of each cylinder (112) receives the force of an impact, which causes the fluid in the cylinder (112) to undergo an increase in pressure, which is relieved by multiple relief valves (302) and serially connected flow restrictors (116). In one embodiment, the relief valves (302) and the flow restrictors (116) are incorporated into a single valve (302'). The system responds to an amount of force caused by an impact and disperses the force accordingly at a controlled rate. Applications for such an embodiment include connection to vehicle bumpers (102), to a seat back (504) where the cylinder (112) is double-acting, and to landing feet (612) for air-drop carriers. |
