PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus with excellent assembling efficiency that can easily be recycled. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus 1 includes: a chassis 10 including a bottom side 11 and outer circumferential walls 13, 15, 17 and 19 and incorporating carriages 25, 27 and an image forming unit 30; and an upper face cover 70 for covering the upper part of the chassis 10 and fitted with platen glass 77. The bottom side 11 and the outer circumferential walls 13, 15, 17 and 19 of the chassis 10 are formed of a synthetic resin integrated molded article. The upper face cover 70 is also formed of a synthetic resin integrated molded article. A lock mechanism 85 comprising a claw lock projection 81 and a claw 45 is provided at the middle of both side walls 73 of the upper face cover 70 and at the middle of the outer circumferential side walls 15, 19 of the chassis 10 opposite to both the side walls 73, respectively, wherein the claw lock projection 81 and the claw 45 snap-fit connect the cover 70 and the chassis 10.
