PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel sheet superior in appearance characteristics, corrosion resistance, weldability, adhesiveness and workability, for a container. SOLUTION: The steel sheet superior in the appearance characteristics for the container has a Ni-Fe alloy layer containing Ni of 50% or higher in an amount of 0.3 to 10 g/m<SP>2</SP>in Ni terms, on at least one face of a steel sheet corresponding to the external surface of a can, which has an Ra (arithmetic mean roughness) of 0.1μm or less in a parallel direction to a rolling direction of an original sheet to be plated, and an Ra of 0.15μm or less in the transverse direction; and has a chromate conversion coating provided further thereon containing metallic Cr in an amount of 0.01 to 1 mg/m<SP>2</SP>and Cr oxide in an amount of 1 to 40 mg/m<SP>2</SP>in metallic Cr terms.
