<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing a fatty acid ester for a long period under mild conditions and at high reaction rate by transesterification reaction using an ion exchange resin saving the step of catalyst separation as a drawback of homogeneous-phase alkali catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the fatty acid ester by transesterification between an oil-and-fat and an alcohol is provided, wherein the method is characterized by using, as a catalyst, a strongly basic anion exchanger comprising an insoluble carrier and a tertiary amine having a pKa value of 9.8 or less, preferably 8-9.5, chemically bound to the carrier. Particularly, the molar ratio of the oil-and-fat to the alcohol is preferably (1:30) to (1:1). The tertiary amine is preferably dimethylethanolamine. Since the oil-and-fat is used in high concentration, the amount of the fatty acid ester produced per unit polymerization of the ion exchange resin and per hour is increased. Namely, the fatty acid ester can be produced in a large amount. The resulting fatty acid ester can be used as a biodiesel fuel and can contribute to the reduction in environmental load. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
