<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic document feeder capable of more stably feeding documents. <P>SOLUTION: The automatic document feeder for an image forming apparatus includes: an automatic document feeding unit 1 provided on the main body top face part 3 of the image forming apparatus so as to be freely opened/closed, having a document placing part 4 for placing the document, and a feeding mechanism for feeding the document from the document placing part 4 to an automatic document reading part 3a provided on the main body top face part 3; a hinge fixing member 11 fixed near the rear end of the main body top face part 3 and having a projection part 11c projecting from the rear side of the main body; and a hinge 12 fixed near the rear end of the main body top face part 3, for operating the feeding unit 1 so as to be freely opened/closed by taking the main body rear side as a fulcrum.
