A means for improving or preventing various symptoms through suppression of expression of an inflammatory cytokine in which the mechanism of action is suppression of suppression of activation of NF-?B is provided. A composition for suppressing the activation of NF-?B containing a serotonin derivative such as feruloylserotonin (N-feruloylserotonin) or p-coumaroylserotonin (N-(p-coumaroyl)serotonin), a composition for suppressing the expression of VCAM-1 and/or MCP-1 through NF-?B containing the serotonin derivative, and an anti-inflammatory composition containing the serotonin derivative are provided. The compositions of the invention are used as a pharmaceutical or a food.
