A method for preparing a thermal element, especially for fluid level monitoring, has a wire construction with an inner conducting core (2) and with outer conducting layers (3) in segmented array for subsequent coating with an insulating layer. An alternate process uses a double layer wire with inner and outer conductors and with selective removal of the outer conductor, e.g. by sputtering. The prepared wire is then coated with an insulating layer.
