A vacuum cutter has a dish or bowl arranged in a housing and rotatable about a vertical/fixed axis and forming an encircling edge flange, and has a sliding seal between the edge flange of the bowl and the housing. The sliding seal (6) provided on the under face of the edge flange (7) of the bowl (3) grips over an encircling outward facing sealing surface (10) of the housing (1), concentric to the rotary axis of the bowl (3), with a sealing lip.
