摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve optimum shock absorption irrespective of the weight of a pedestrian colliding with a vehicle. <P>SOLUTION: When a specified pedestrian where collision possibility with one's own vehicle is determined to be not less than a threshold, an image part corresponding to the specified pedestrian is extracted from the image obtained by picking up the image with an image pick-up device, the body height H and the body width W of the specified pedestrian are determined, and a predicted weight WT of the specified pedestrian is determined (60 to 66). The optimum spring force and damping force in deploying/expanding of the airbag for the pedestrian according to the predicted weight WT of the specified pedestrian are calculated, and an airbag deployment condition is decided (70 to 74) based on the calculated spring force and the damping force. The deployment start time of the airbag for the pedestrian is decided by calculating the collision prospective time with the specified pedestrian, and the airbag for the pedestrian is deployed in a decided deployment condition from the decided deployment start time (76 to 80). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
