An LCD for a medical purpose and a fabrication method thereof are provided to provide a flat planarization layer without a stepped portion by forming a first planarization layer in a cell area defined by a black matrix by a mask process. A black matrix(132) is formed to define a cell area on an upper substrate(111). A first planarization layer(136a) is formed in the cell area defined by the black matrix and has the same height as the black matrix. A second planarization layer(136b) is formed on an entire surface of the substrate including the black matrix and the first planarization layer. The second planarization layer has a thickness ranging from 0.1mum to 1.5mum. The black matrix includes an inorganic material or an organic material.
