SIDE-PUMPED LASER OR AMPLIFIER DEVICE

A side pumped laser or amplifier device is disclosed. A gain medium (30) of the laser or amplifier is side pumped with at least one pump source (34). Cooling of the gain medium prevents the detrimental effects of heating on the spatial mode of the laser or amplifier and on the physical character of the gain medium. The pumped faces (32) of the gain medium are cooled with transparent cooling blocks (38). Non-pumped faces (42, 44) are cooled with cooling blocks (40) or are air cooled.
